How To Remove Wax From Your Carpet

Wax is a material that resembles the sticky substance made by bees which is soft and easily moulded when it’s warm. It’s made from petroleum and is used in candles, polishes, and cosmetics.

There are two main types of wax and these are sugar-based and resin-based. Each wax type has different properties and needs different techniques for cleaning up if you need to remove it from spillage on your carpet!

See how to remove wax from your carpet here…

Wax cleaning methods:

Your comprehensive tool list:
– An ice pack or frozen vegetables
– Iron
– Paper towels
– Microfibre cloths
– Carpet cleaner
– Rubbing alcohol
– Butter knife or spoon
– Essential oils
– Baking soda
– Vacuum cleaner
Acting quickly when you notice a wax spillage is key as it saves time and effort!

Getting wax from your carpet can be done by following these simple steps:

Method one

Freeze the wax by applying ice such as a bag of frozen vegetables or an ice pack directly onto the area. Don’t use ice cubes as these will melt and make the wax wet. As the wax freezes, it solidifies and makes it easier to remove.

Using a butter knife or the back of a spoon gently scrape off as much of the set wax as you can. Then you can apply a carpet cleaner and spray the solution onto the stained area followed by a rinse with clean water. Be careful not to overwet as this can cause future issues with mould, mildew, and unpleasant odours.

Blot the dampened area with a clean microfibre cloth until dry and all traces of wax have been removed. This process may cause your carpet fibres to flatten or become stiff. You can gently brush the area with the attachment on your vacuum cleaner to restore your carpet.

* Handy hints: Use dry ice that’s much colder than regular ice so will freeze the wax more quickly without leaving any residue. As dry ice can cause skin damage you’ll need to wear protective gloves if you choose this technique.

Method two

Heat the wax by placing a towel or cloth on top of the wax stain. With an iron set at the lowest temperature rub the iron over the towel for about 30 seconds to absorb the wax. Bear in mind if you have the iron on a too-high setting you risk melting the carpet fibres. Keep moving the towel on fresh areas until all of the wax has been absorbed.

You may find that the wax has left a stain but you can apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto a cloth and dab the affected area to remove this. Or you could set your iron to a steam setting and iron the stain over a cloth which will help to lift it.

Follow up with a clean of the area using a recommended carpet cleaner, blotting the excess moisture out with a clean microfibre cloth. Finally, restore the carpet fibres with a thorough vacuum.

If the wax has left a particular scent you can remove this by mixing 15 drops of essential oil with 16 oz of baking soda and sprinkling it onto the carpet. After leaving it to sit for an hour or two vacuum any excess residue up thoroughly.

* Handy hints: If you’re concerned about using an iron on your carpet you may prefer to use a hairdryer. Keep the hairdryer at a safe distance using the hot setting to carefully heat the wax. Blot constantly with paper towels between heating until the wax has gone.
